America’s first National Wildlife Refuge is located near the Atlantic coastal community of Sebastian, Florida. A little island in the Indian River Lagoon, a dot on the map really, but with a very large international footprint. Pelican Island, and its surrounding 5400+ acres of protected waters and lands.

Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge stretches across 20.5 miles of beach and shoreline habitat along Florida's east coast in Brevard and Indian River Counties. The refuge was designated to protect habitat at the most significant area for loggerhead sea turtle nesting in the world, and for green turtle nesting in North America

The Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area offers pleasant trails with wide paths covered in pine needles. The weather is mostly sunny, providing ample shade from the trees along the way. The white and red trails are clearly marked, while the east trail, although unmarked, is easy to follow. This area is home to various wildlife such as lizards and butterflies.

Round Island Riverside Park is located at 2200 South Highway A1A. Features two boat ramps, canoe launch, picnic pavilion, and a 400’ boardwalk to observe the many manatees. Cross over the foot bridge to a small island with trails, observation tower and a fishing pier. South of the park is the Round Island South Conservation Area

Hop in a see-through canoe and explore the Indian River Lagoon like never before or sit back, relax and learn about the local wildlife aboard a pontoon-style eco-tour. Located in Brevard and Indian River counties, Indian River-Malabar to Vero Beach Aquatic Preserve encompasses 28 miles, totaling 29,000 acres of the lagoon. The aquatic preserve begins just north of Turkey Creek at Castaway Point in Palm Bay, extends south to northern Vero Beach corporate limit and includes waters of Turkey Creek and St. Sebastian River, which are the main tributaries of the aquatic preserve.

Pocahontas Park is a place to play pickleball in Vero Beach, FL. There are 12 outdoor hard and asphalt courts. These are dedicated courts with permanent lines and nets. The courts cannot be reserved. Terry Shannon's Metal Detecting: A beginner's guide. Detecting shipwrecks of the 1715 Spanish Galleon Fleet off of Florida's Treasure Coast!

In 1715, eleven Spanish ships known as the Treasure Fleet carried gold and silver, traveling to Spain. Seven days after they left Cuba, the ships sank from a hurricane. Experts assume that the ships sank near Vero Beach in present-day Florida. Over time, gold coins would wash to shore, and thus, the treasure coast was born.

The McLarty Treasure Museum is a great little museum that paints the story of the ill-fated 1715 fleet of eleven Spanish galleon ships laden with gold, silver, copper and riches as they were heading back to Spain. All eleven ships sank close to shore in a hurricane.  This museum is located south of the Sebastian Inlet State Park on part of the former site of the “Survivors & Salvager’s Camp – 1715 Fleet.”

These walks, which are authorized under a special permit issued by the State of Florida, provide a possible opportunity for you to witness a nesting loggerhead sea turtle in a safe and legal manner.

The turtle walks at Sebastian Inlet State Park are a memorable experience that allow our guests to learn about, observe and hopefully see the nesting and egg-laying process of a loggerhead sea turtle.

If you want to see a sea turtle in Florida, you can attend one of the permitted public turtle walks, a public hatchling release, or a nest hatch success evaluation.  You can also visit a facility that houses or rehabilitates sea turtles.
